Born with muscular dystrophy, John had relied on family caregivers for the better part of his life. Time changed his support system, as they needed care of their own. Not one to be held back in life, John took matters into his own hands, and contacted Independent Life Home Care for a consultation.
During his consultation, John met directly with Zlata, founder of Independent Life Home Care. As an adult living with a disability herself, she had a unique understanding of his needs – something he hadn’t found with the other home care agencies he’d met with. Zlata made John feel comfortable with the prospect of new caregivers and was able to accurately assess his needs in order to pair him with the right services, including:
• Mobility and safety assistance
• Assistance with bathing, dressing and grooming
• Meal planning and preparation
• Running errands
• Transportation to appointments
• Light housekeeping and laundry
Because John required 24-hour care, Independent Life Home Care developed a team of reliable caregivers who would visit his home in shifts, so that someone would be there to aid him whenever needed. John’s caregiving team consisted of men and women who had a special knowledge of his disability and the specific assistance he would need, as well as were a good match for John’s vibrant personality.
The first caregiver arrives shortly before John wakes, and assists him with his daily routine. During the day, John’s caregiver works to tidy the home, preparing meals, and assists him in running errands or going to appointments, if needed. In the afternoon, the next caregiver arrives, who will prepare the evening meal, do laundry, transport John to any evening activities, and assist him with his evening routine. Before bed, another caregiver arrives, who helps him into bed and is available throughout the night, should John need to move about or require other assistance.
