Herman’s Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis came as a shock to his entire family. He’d always been sharp as a tack, could answer any trivia question, and taught many students over his career as a high school English teacher. When his wife Laura first noticed his forgetfulness, she thought nothing of it; but the time Herman couldn’t find his way through their neighborhood, she knew he needed to see his physician.

With his cognitive abilities declining at a quick pace, Laura found herself overwhelmed – their lives had both changed so much. She tired herself, tending to her husband’s needs day and night, often pushing off her own appointments and canceling social events. Family members worried that her wellbeing was suffering as she was missing important doctors’ visits of her own to tend to Herman, and urged her to look into in-home care.
Independent Life Home Care worked with Laura to develop and in-home care plan that would meet Herman’s needs while accommodating the life Laura wanted for him, as well as herself. She decided that an extra set of hands were needed at home, and a part-time caregiver would be quite a help. Herman’s caregiver visits three times a week, staying the day and providing services such as:

• Safety supervision
• Conversation and cognitive stimulation
• Meal preparation
• Respite care

Herman and Laura were matched with Brian, an Independent Life Care giver who is quick-witted and dedicated. He visits Herman on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, arriving shortly after breakfast. During this time, he and Herman read the paper, play cards, and even test each other’s trivia knowledge on Herman’s good days.

These three days a week also provide a much-needed break for Laura. She’s back on schedule with her appointments and is even enjoying weekly lunches with her friends. Respite care has changed her life for the better just as much as Brian’s compassionate care has helped Herman.

  • Dad really struggled to stay active after Mom passed, I think he felt a bit burdened by all he had to do. His caregiver stepped in to assist with household chores and to help him with his needs, and I think that made quite a difference in improving his quality of life. That companionship and mental stimulation seemed to help him carry on, doing the things he loved.

  • I’ve always been independent, but I’m a realist as well. I recognized I was having trouble with certain things, so I got to work searching for a solution which would help me stay healthy, happy, and in the Las Vegas home I love. I contracted senior care services with Independent Life Home Care, and was able to choose the services I need. It’s great having someone to help me with the tasks that have become difficult, and I also welcome the conversation and company of my caregiver each week.
