Independent Life

Changes that come with age, injury, or illness can make it difficult for seniors to manage their everyday needs alone. While family often may pitch in to ease the burden and help out, you may require more assistance than family members can offer due to their own physical limitations or commitments. In-home senior care may be an appropriate solution for your situation, where a caregiver will come to your home to tackle the tasks you need help with.

Adapting to a new caregiver when you’ve previously been independent can be an uneasy experience if you don’t know what to expect. It is important that you be completely comfortable with your senior caregiver so that you can build a relationship that offers the companionship and support you desire. Below are some tips to help ease the transition to in-home care and become comfortable with your caregiver.

Finding the right match
When you begin interviewing home care agencies, ask questions about how they select a caregiver for you or your loved one. You want a caregiver who is compatible with you personality-wise, and who can also meet your care needs. A good in-home care agency will have a thorough process in place which allows them to get to know your personality, interests, needs, and other factors so that they can pair you with a caregiver who can offer not just the needed assistance, but the companionship and conversation that will allow you to build a positive relationship that will impact your health and well-being for the better.

On your caregiver’s first day
Before your caregiver’s first day on the job, you will have already discussed with the senior care agency all the tasks you’ll require assistance with. When your caregiver arrives, introduce yourself and review the tasks that he or she will be helping you with on a daily basis. If a relative has been assisting you with setting up care, you may also wish to have them stay with you on that first day for your own comfort.

On the first day, spend time getting to know one another. As you become more familiar with your caregiver, you’ll get an idea of whether or not this person is actually a good fit for you personality-wise. Take your caregiver on a tour of the home, and be sure to point out important details, such as where the linens are stored or where your favorite mug can be found. Helping your caregiver become familiar with your hone will help them acclimate to your environment so they can easily dive in and begin providing the care you need. You may also wish to offer recommendations to your senior caregiver as to your preferences and how to perform certain care tasks.

At the end of the day
Once the first day is over and your caregiver has left, discuss your feelings with your spouse or relative who is assisting with setting up your care. Talk about your first impressions of your caregiver and decide if you’d like to continue this caregiver relationship. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact the senior care agency for answers.

Don’t be intimidated as you begin in-home senior care. You’ll probably have a short period of adjustment as you get used to relying on a caregiver to begin with, as well as getting to know your caregiver. This is completely normal and with the right caregiver match, you’ll soon find that your caregiver will be a positive addition to your life!

  • Dad really struggled to stay active after Mom passed, I think he felt a bit burdened by all he had to do. His caregiver stepped in to assist with household chores and to help him with his needs, and I think that made quite a difference in improving his quality of life. That companionship and mental stimulation seemed to help him carry on, doing the things he loved.
