Independent Life

As you age, it’s to be expected that you will need to take some precautions to maintain your safety at home. Mobility and memory are just two aspects that can change with age, leaving you vulnerable to hazards around the home that formerly were not a problem. While some safety issues are easy to spot, many are easy to overlook; the following senior care safety tips will help you take precautions to maintain your safety at home.

Senior Care Bathroom Safety

  • Place a faucet cover over the bathtub faucet. Should you fall in the tub, a foam or rubber cover can reduce your risk of serious injury.
  • Set your water heater’s thermostat to 120°F or lower to prevent scalding from high water temperatures.
  • Install handrails in your shower, near your toilet, and other areas of need for assistance moving about the bathroom safely.
  • Place nonskid strips on tile floors and in the tub or shower to prevent falls on wet, slippery surfaces.

Senior Care Medication Safety

  • Store all medications in a safe location. Consider keeping all medications in one location so nothing gets misplaced.
  • If you are unsure about your medication instructions, do not hesitate to ask your doctor or pharmacist for clarification. When filling your prescriptions, ask for printouts for your medication if you have trouble reading the small print on the bottles.

Senior Care Kitchen Safety

  • Clearly mark the on and off positions of knobs and switches on appliances to prevent them from being left on accidentally.
  • Consider using small kitchen appliances with an automatic shut-off feature to eliminate fire and other safety hazards.

Senior Care General Household Safety

  • On interior doors, install doorknobs which do not lock. This will prevent you from becoming accidentally locked in or out of rooms in your home.
  • Use decorative decals placed at eye level on windows and glass doors to help you easily identify where windows and doors are located to prevent accidents.
  • Install nightlights around the home, especially in dimly lit areas and areas where increased visibility is a necessity, such as hallways, near stairs, bathrooms, and more.

  • After being admitted to the hospital for so long, I just didn’t feel ready to be on my own yet. Independent Life connected me with caregivers who provided the home care I needed to manage my recovery and keep my house in order. I welcomed having someone to chat with regularly, and felt safer knowing someone was there when I was not yet back to my best self. I’d certainly recommend their home care services to anyone facing a lengthy recovery.

  • Dad really struggled to stay active after Mom passed, I think he felt a bit burdened by all he had to do. His caregiver stepped in to assist with household chores and to help him with his needs, and I think that made quite a difference in improving his quality of life. That companionship and mental stimulation seemed to help him carry on, doing the things he loved.

I recognized I was having trouble with certain things, so I got to work searching for a solution which would help me stay healthy, happy, and in the Las Vegas home I love. I contracted senior care services with Independent Life Home Care, and was able to choose the services I need. It’s great having someone to help me with the tasks that have become difficult, and I also welcome the conversation and company of my caregiver each week.
