Safety Tips for Independent Seniors

Approximately one-third of U.S. seniors who live outside of care facilities are living alone; half of these seniors are women aged 75 and up. In order to remain safe while maintaining independence, older adults must take precautions to control dangers which could threaten their way of life.

Have backup supplies on-hand
Dangerous weather conditions, power outages, and other disasters could strike when a senior is home alone, without a caregiver or other companion – do they have access to the necessary items which will keep them safe and protected?

• Warm clothing and blankets should be on-hand for winter emergencies.
• Flashlights, batteries, and candles will provide emergency light sources.
• Have enough bottled water and non-perishable food on-hand to last several days.
• Additional medication and reserve oxygen should also be available.

Eliminate household hazards
One fall can mean the difference between an independent way of life and relying on a caregiver around the clock – approximately 1.6 million seniors land in the emergency room due to a fall each year. Removing hazards which could cause a fall and installing safety equipment can help seniors stay safe inside the home and on their private property.

• Install grab bars and handrails throughout the home and exterior walkways.
• Remove loose rugs and carpets; instead, install non-slip doormats and carpeting where needed.
• Improve lighting in dimly lit areas of the home or property to help seniors better visualize tripping hazards.
• Remove clutter from the floor and cords which run across walkways.

Improve socialization
Seniors who live alone aren’t just at risk of physical dangers; they can easily become isolated, which can cause depression. Seniors who engage in activities outside the home are less likely to feel this way.

• Schedule regular visits with family and friends, and appointments with medical providers to ensure the senior’s well-being and health.
• Participate in community events, such as those held by a local senior center.

  • I found Independent Life by searching the internet. Everything with them has been great every step of the way. The owners are nice. They have a really good office manager, and everybody communicates. They're all knowledgeable. The caregiver is the best part. She's just awesome. She makes all of us feel comfortable specially my mom.

  • I interviewed Independent Life and talked about providing care for my mother, who is now 88 years old. She has difficulty preforming every day tasks and we just cant be there for her all the time, so we decide to hire a home care agency. We found Independent Life on the internet. Independent Life seemed very friendly and extremely knowledgeable.

  • I always knew that my dad was in good hands with the caregivers provided by Independent life. The caregivers took dad to his doctors appointments, adult day care, and out to lunch. On the weekends, the caregiver would make dad pancakes. I would recommend this company to anyone who needs help to manage their elderly parent.
