Falls can have life-changing consequences to seniors living independently at home. To lower fall risk, we encourage you to implement these fall prevention tips from our caregivers.

1. Remove obstacles. Clutter, low furniture, throw rugs and loose items can all be hazards to seniors. Remove these items from high traffic areas in the home.

2. Add assistive devices. Installing grip bars in areas where falls are likely to occur can add convenience and safety for your senior loved one. Install grab bars in the bathroom and along walkways throughout the home to provide extra help.

3. Install non-skid surfaces. Wet areas can pose extra hazards to a senior. Install non-skid pads in the bathtub and shower, and in other potentially wet areas of the home, such as a tiled entryway. Non-skid strips can provide extra traction where needed, such as on stairways.

4. Clear exterior walkways. Snow and ice cause countless accidents each year. Treat your loved one’s walkways with ice melt to prevent icy build up, and shovel the walkway to clear snow as needed.

5. Use safe footwear. Ensure your senior loved one wears appropriate footwear to reduce falls. Wear tightfitting but comfortable shoes with non-slip soles.

6. Make safe upgrades. If remodeling the home, consider safety upgrades. Transforming first-floor areas for living to reduce stair use and eliminating hard tile flooring are some improvements which can benefit seniors.

7. Upgrade armchairs. Chairs with sturdy armrests offer extra support when getting up and down. If your loved one’s favorite easy chair isn’t supportive, shop for a chair with sturdy armrests which make standing up easier.

8. Install emergency monitoring. Should your loved one suffer a fall, you want to know they’ll be attended to if no one is around. Emergency monitoring systems which include a personal response pendant provide your loved one with a way to call for help from anywhere.

  • I found Independent Life by searching the internet. Everything with them has been great every step of the way. The owners are nice. They have a really good office manager, and everybody communicates. They're all knowledgeable. The caregiver is the best part. She's just awesome. She makes all of us feel comfortable specially my mom.

  • I interviewed Independent Life and talked about providing care for my mother, who is now 88 years old. She has difficulty preforming every day tasks and we just cant be there for her all the time, so we decide to hire a home care agency. We found Independent Life on the internet. Independent Life seemed very friendly and extremely knowledgeable.

  • I always knew that my dad was in good hands with the caregivers provided by Independent life. The caregivers took dad to his doctors appointments, adult day care, and out to lunch. On the weekends, the caregiver would make dad pancakes. I would recommend this company to anyone who needs help to manage their elderly parent.
